In
the average classroom, the teacher’s voice is usually only 5 dB louder than the
background noise. However, for 100
percent understanding, normal hearing and English-speaking children need the
teacher’s voice to be 12 dB louder than the background noise (Ross, 1978).
In
1985, classroom amplification systems were installed in 17 elementary
classrooms. Additional classrooms were
amplified each year. Since the first
year of amplification implementation, learning disability placements have
consistently dropped. In six years,
learning disability placements dropped 40%.
